#24: COVID 19: MY THOUGHTS SO FAR
The extent which the human mind can travel to is immeasurable. One can't control that. That's why I happen to be in sync with my friend, Isaac, when he told me that he can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.
Well, it's not just any Isaac. I'm talking about the famous physicist, Isaac Newton. And, uhm, he didn't tell me that, I actually read it somewhere.
In his actual words,...
“I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.”
Looking closely, you'd see that he's right. The human mind? Well, you can't really control it because people have divergent thoughts ranging from sensible things to even the most inane bullshit you can think of.
See, people believe in a lot of things. And like a dice that's been cast, some people's beliefs are cast in concrete. Nothing ever changes even when there's an array of facts presented to them.
In fact, it's in times like this in which the world is going through a pandemic (or a plandemic as supposedly said by some people) that one gets to understand the complexity and gullibility of the human mind.
I've come across posts online made by people who have concocted conspiracy theories claiming the novel Covid-19 is as a result of one reason or the other, which, they apparently made themselves to believe is true.
Well, conspiracy theories can be misleading, however, it can still be true. As to whether some of these theories are true or not, only time shall tell.
On the other hand, others are still out there saying the rising number of cases in our country, Nigeria is a charade done with the sole intention of looting public funds. As to whether that is true or not, I can't say exactly.
In a related vein, many don't even believe in the existence of the virus. As to that, I still can't fathom out the reason behind their outright conclusion.
Oh, I forgot to mention about those who have decided to be negligent of the measures set in place to reduce the spread of the virus. They seem to place all their faith in God, saying "just pray and have faith.” This category of people are the ones who have a superficial understanding of what a religion is.
Look, one must play his part first before praying. That's how it works. Problems don't mysteriously disappear without making a deliberate effort to make them to. Doing your best, as earlier stated, and praying to God so that the virus ends is a simultaneous pair that works side by side. Even if it doesn't, rarely.
I'm writing this because this period reveals the diversity of the human mind, and how people can differ in what they choose to believe is true or not.
Now, I understand that man, in his pursuit for creating meaning out of events, can go to any extent. I think there's this utmost pleasure in creating meaning out of events. Simply put, that's how conspiracy theories arise—all nothing but man's search for meaning.
As to those who don't believe in the existence of the virus, it's a clear-cut example that shows ignorance is a disease that if not cured, can lead to hundreds or millions of people to death.
Did I even mention those who tested positive and have been running away from isolation centres? No, I didn't. I believe you're starting to have a picture of what Isaac Newton said about not being able to calculate the madness of people.
It's quite unfortunate.
What we ought do about all that's unfolding is to focus on putting into practice the measures needed to prevent the spread of the virus while patiently praying and waiting for everything to come to an end so that we can all continue with our lives.
I know things are not easy. There's a lot of hunger out there. Truly, a hungry man is an angry man. But the best thing we can do now is to believe this virus truly exist.
As to the government, well...I just don't know what they are upto in terms of palliative or anything of such. I do hope they do something soon before hunger starts killing people.
We will be alright. Everything is about time. Nonetheless, what have you learnt so far about this pandemic?
